Artist, Karen Flannigan is inspired by the great outdoors, oceans, beaches, nature and animals, she has painted since childhood. Her earlier drawings were of seascapes, boats, horses, plants, flowers. Living on the North Coast of Cornwall my surroundings are inspiring. A natural born beachcomber, forager and recycler/reuser, I have always been enchanted with using what I find and turning it into works of art.
The materials used in this picture, have been gathered from beaches in North Cornwall. The fish are made from sea glass washed up on North Cornish shores, the seaweed I pressed, this was collected by fellow Cornish artist Jane Darke, to help me with the picture. I used acrylic paint for the background sea and sand effects. The deep box frame, is painted in my signature colour, Fired Earth paint and hand finished with wax.
The picture took a period of several months to complete, from the design stages, to collecting the materials and, putting it all together.
The picture is called ‘Glass Beneath The Sea’. It represents the sheer amount of waste glass that is washed up from our oceans and shows, something quite lovely can be created from it. A ‘waste resource’. I have made a number of pictures using sea glass, including boats and fish, in the same deep box frames of varying sizes, using my signature Fired Earth paint on the frames.
“I chose to donate this picture to the Fishermen’s Mission, as I wanted to help raise funds and awareness for this wonderful charity, which supports fishermen and their families. The fishmish is a vital charity, helping the fishing community. I also wanted to raise more awareness of waste glass in our seas.” said Karen.
The value of the picture is £375.
The picture is signed and is a one off piece of work, all my work is by commission. Karen Flannigan – Artist.
